Should you tip your tattoo artist?

Clients often wonder what to do when it comes to tipping their tattoo artist. A tip is commonly used to show gratitude and appreciation to the individuals who provided the service in addition to their base pay. Therefore, it is not mandatory, but a gesture to show that you were happy with the service.

The customary tipping rate for tattoos is around 10-20%; however, that may go well over your budget as tattoo quotes can run quite high depending on the size and complexity of the design. To make it easier, Tattoo People gives the option to input a percentage or a dollar amount you wish to give as a tip when paying by card, so you may choose the rate that goes within your budget to show appreciation towards your artist.

Tattoos are not a minimum wage job, do we need to tip?

Tattoo artists are definitely not a minimum wage job. However, they do have a certain rate they need to share with the shop depending on where they reside. Whether it is a bed/station/chair rental system or a commission division between the shop and the artist; the artist does not take the full amount you pay for your piece.

As well, most tattoo supplies except the inks and machines need to be disposed of after a single use. The artists at Tattoo People say that the supply fee they have to spend for each tattoo is around $50-$100 depending on the piece.

Tattoo artists hold a lot of pride and responsibility towards their work. They are leaving a permanent mark on someone else’s skin with their own drawing and by leaving a tip, you are showing support to the artist monetarily as well as emotionally. You would be even supporting the tattoo community in the long run!
